In May 1938, the American Trading and Production Corporation (ATAPCO, the holding company for the Blaustein's interest in Pan American Petroleum and Transport Company) purchased its first tank vessel, the SS Pennsylvania Sun (renamed American Trader), from the Sun Oil Company and launched the corporation into the tanker business.
